Travel Charities – Gift Ideas for the Holidays

Travel Charities – Gift Ideas for the Holidays

Last month Dave and I had the pleasure of doing that Orbis Flight For Sight Virtual Event where teams competed against each other to test their knowledge of travel trivia while raising money to end preventable blindness around the world. We are happy to announce that two more events will take place on November 30th and December 9th. We would be happy if you join us! Register here today!

The holidays are always a time of giving. We often look for a charity to donate money to towards the end of the year. If you’re looking to do the same, the Orbis Flight for Sight event might just be for you.

Flight for Sight – Give away the eyesight

Travel Charities – Gift Ideas for the Holidays

Flight for Sight is a 60-minute immersive entertainment experience where Dave and I host teams that take part in travel quiz challenges and interactive games. It’s the perfect team building event for companies looking to bring their employees together, or you can log in individually and join a team.

During the event, you will entertain attendees as Captain Khoi Duong guides you through live streaming flight simulation experiences. The flight simulations are current GPS satellite images.

FedEx and Orbis Flying Eye Hospital

Participants attending the Orbis Flight for Sight Event will take a virtual tour of the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital. FedEx donated a cargo jet that was converted into a state-of-the-art eye clinic for teaching and training purposes.

The next event will take place on November 30th, just in time for Giving Tuesday. Teams of up to 12 people must collect a minimum of $ 2,000. That’s only $ 166 per person. So bring your co-workers, family or friends together for a fun way to raise money for a charity!

Now, if you’re looking for other ways to donate this holiday season, we’ve put together a list of some of the best charities for the travel lover. Almost all charities around the world are worthy causes and deserve our funds, but we cannot cover all of them. This is just a list to help you get the creative juices of giving flowing and to raise awareness of some of the causes that matter to us.

1. Orbis flight to see

Orbis is a non-governmental organization (NGO) that brings people together to end preventable blindness around the world. They have been in use in Africa, Asia and South America for 40 years.

It is truly amazing to hear that nearly 1 billion people around the world are living with blindness that could be treated or prevented if they had access to ophthalmology. Orbis is committed to ensuring that everyone, regardless of where they live, has access to ophthalmology. Not only do they have a network of doctors, nurses, anesthetists, and biomedical engineers who volunteer their time, but they share their expertise with local medical professionals. For fundraising ideas, visit their website.

2. Born Free Foundation

The Born Free Foundation is very important to us. Founded in 1984, the Born Free Foundation was created to stop the exploitation and suffering of individuals in captivity or in the wild.

Your donations will be used for conservation, rescue and care, sustainability, anti-captivity and education. Born Free is committed to keeping wild animals where they belong, in the wild. They work to ensure the best results for wildlife, including banning trophy hunting, illegal trafficking and phasing out of zoos, while promoting better protection for animals.

For more information, see Born Free Foundation here.

3. Animals of Asia

If there’s one thing in this world that upsets me, it’s the bear bile farms. Animals Asia is dedicated to ending bear bile farming and improving animal welfare across Asia. They have been rescuing bears since 1994, and Animals Asia was founded in 1998. They have bear rescue stations in China and Vietnam and are working tirelessly to end this inhumane practice. After years of working together, Animals Asia has signed a letter of intent with the Vietnamese government to completely shut down the bear bile farm in Vietnam by 2022.

They are also working to end the trade in cats and dogs for food in Asia and to alleviate the suffering of captive animals that are abused in zoos and safari parks in Southeast Asia. Donate here

3. Plan internationally

As we cycled through Africa we saw firsthand the world Plan Canada did for the churches in Africa. Plan pays attention to children around the world and equal rights for girls around the world. We actually drove for their campaign “Because I am a girl” to help young women to support them with education and opportunities. But Plan supports all children and communities from child protection to schools and ensures that the communities have clean water. One of the projects that we visited in Cairo and that really caught our attention was the economic empowerment of women in particular through microfinance. Visit Plan for more details.

4. Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

For those looking to help with a focus on Africa, this offersThe Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is a charity that provides a safe haven for elephants and rhinos in Africa. We visited the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya where we saw firsthand their orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program. It is heartbreaking to see what elephants and rhinos are facing in Africa, but it is good to know that there are programs like this one that are committed to protecting and conserving wildlife. From fighting poaching to educating communities to providing veterinary assistance, your dollars will go a long way towards helping an elephant thrive.

5. Charity water

travel the world and make a difference

Water is our most precious resource and we are running out of clean water quickly around the world. A staggering 785 million people lack basic access to clean and safe drinking water. On bike tours through Africa and trips through rural South America and Asia, we experienced first hand how precious water is. People walk miles every day to get clean water. Charity Water works every month to bring clean and safe water to families around the world. Charity Water was founded in 2006 and works towards its goal of giving everyone access to water during their lifetime.

When you donate to Charity Water, 100% of your donation goes to the field. Private donors cover their running costs, so you can be sure that your money will be used to fund water projects. Read more here.

6. WWF

The World Wildlife Fund is an oldie, but a goodie. We have been donating to WWF for as long as I can remember. The WWF has been working for nature conservation in 100 countries for 60 years. When looking for a charity, the WWF spans a broad spectrum from the climate crisis to our oceans, freshwater, forests and wildlife. Your donation helps to build a future in which people can live in harmony with nature

7. Ocean constancy

the Marine protection has led the International Coastal Cleanup for more than 30 years. Ocean Conservancy works on the pillars of science and has worked tirelessly to find solutions to the challenges our oceans face. They urge governments to make policy changes and, being based in Washington DC, wield real power. From ocean planning to creating sustainable fisheries to reducing the litter we find in our oceans, the Ocean Conservancy is a premier ocean charity.

8. Take 3

When we first heard about it Take 3 We thought it was an excellent idea. Imagine if everyone in the world took only 3 pieces of rubbish with them every time they went to a beach, riverside, or lake park. That one little act can change our waterways. But Take 3 has other programs from education, youth leadership, and other programs as well.

9. Sustainable travel internationally

As travel enthusiasts, we all do our own harm in the world when we get on a plane. With Sustainable international travel, in addition to calculating your carbon footprint, you can protect vulnerable travel destinations by working with communities to clean beaches and preserve culture. They work with governments and local leaders to help them implement guidelines that lead to healthier travel destinations. You will work hand in hand with policy makers to develop best practices for sustainable tourism development. Also, they work to educate travelers to make the world a better place through their choices in the way they travel.

10. Pencils of promise

When traveling through Asia, Africa and South America, children have always asked us about a ballpoint pen or pencil. It’s easiest to put a smile on a child’s face. However, when traveling, it is almost overwhelming that we all ask for a pen. Instead, we’d rather give to organizations that help a community than to a child.

The pencils of promise Community is committed to building a better world through education around the world. When you donate, your money will be used to support a teacher or provide water, hand washing, and sanitation for students. They build schools and classrooms and are currently working with public school systems and communities in Ghana, Guatemala and Laos.

11. Make a wish foundation

I will never forget that every year my friend Sugar from YTV gets on a plane to join the Make a Wish kids on the journey of a lifetime. The aim is to fulfill the wishes of seriously ill children. Imagine helping a child go on a dream trip to bring joy to their possibly final days.

12. SPCA

Whenever you’re looking for a charity near you, your local SPCA always needs funds to rescue animals and care for animal shelters. This is always my charity. We have that. given Ontario SPCA for years and it feels good to know that our money will go towards animal rescue, adoption and humane education. If you love animals this is a great local charity. Find the local SPCA near you.
