Rita Moreno Apologizes For In The Heights Comments

“I am incredibly disappointed in myself,” Moreno said in a statement (via The Hollywood Reporter). “While making a statement in defense of Lin Manuel Miranda at the… Jacket Show last night I have been clearly dismissive of black lives that matter in our Latin community.”

Moreno’s statement comes up a day later, during an interview with Stephen Colbert The late show, she spoke about the problem of the film without dark-skinned Afro-Latinx actors, which resulted in a public apology from Lin-Manuel Miranda.

“I hear the pain and frustration with colorism, of the feeling of still not being seen in the feedback,” he wrote in posted a note on Twitter. “I hear that without enough dark Afro-Latino representation, the work feels extraction from the community we were so eager to represent with pride and joy.”

“I’m just saying, why can’t you just wait and leave it alone?” she said at one point in the interview. “There are a lot of people who are puertorriqueño, who are also from Guatemala, who are dark and also fair. We are all colors in Puerto Rico. And so it is.”

“It’s so easy to forget how celebration for some is a lament for others,” Moreno also wrote in the statement.

“In addition to applauding Lin for his wonderful film version of In the Heights, let me add my appreciation for his sensitivity and determination to be more inclusive in the Afro-Latino community in the future.”

“Look, you CAN teach this old dog new tricks.”
