In a serious escalation, January 6 Select Committee chair Benny Thompson announced that subpoenas to appear before the committee would be going out to the organizers of the peaceful meeting near the White House with incumbent President Donald Trump.
The meeting, billed as “Stop the Steal,” was designed to rally people who believed the 2020 presidential election was full of fraud.
Violence later erupted at the Capitol when it was breached while the electoral votes were being counted.
What exactly gives Congress the legal power to sue citizens over their political protests???
If they have committed crimes, it must be investigated by DOJ/FBI. What gives Congress the power to summon citizens to these political interrogations? https://t.co/Cr2bhtWbtX

Who does the committee want to hear from?
The January 6 committee wants to hear testimonies from Ali Alexander, aka Ali Abdul Akbar, and Nathan Martin. The two are linked to permit applications for the rally.
A report from Axios claims that information released by the commission states that Alexander,
“Repeatedly referred to the potential use of force to achieve the goals of the organization at Stop-the-Steal-sponsored events and claimed to have been in communication with the White House and members of Congress about events planned to be held together. fall with the certification of the 2020 Electoral College Results.”

Commission president defends subpoenas
Commission chairman Thompson defended the need for testimony from the organizers of the peaceful meeting that had approved permits.
Thompson stated in a press release, “The January 6 Capitol rally, like the White House rally that day, immediately preceded the violent assault on the seat of our democracy.”
“Over the course of that day, the demonstrations escalated to violence and protesters became rioters. The Select Committee must understand all the details about the events that took place before the attack, including who was involved in planning and financing it. We expect these witnesses to cooperate fully with our investigation.”
Media outlet Politico refers to the event as the “pre-insurgency rally”, although there is no evidence linking the two events.
What Nancy Pelosi and Liz Cheney are doing to suppress the First Amendment right to protest is disgusting and terrifying. Just like the propaganda media make it possible. https://t.co/qcXahrQgKs

Not everyone obeys subpoenas
The bad news for the committee is that not everyone will show up to be grilled. Four former aides to President Trump are reportedly defying the subpoenas and will not attend committee hearings.
A report from The Guardian says former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, former adviser Steve Bannon, former communications officer Dan Scavino and former Secretary of Defense Kash Patel will oppose the subpoenas.
However, in the usual irony that often accompanies Democrat action, as committee chair Rep. Thompson is investigating what is called a ‘rebellion’, Thompson may have some knowledge about rebellion.
In the early 1970s, Thompson was an alderman in a small town in Mississippi. There he openly supported a separatist movement called the Republic of New Africa (RNA).
Thompson blamed local police for clashes with the group that resulted in the death of a police officer and injuries to an FBI agent.
