If Glee taught us anything it’s that the world of competitive theater is nothing without a little in-club rivalry. And in this week’s episode, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is exploring its cutthroat side. And Decider has your first exclusive look at Season 2, Episode 4 “The Storm” and its choreographed battle.
Last season Carlos (Frankie Rodriguez) served as the production’s choreographer. But accepting a starring role has made Carlos gracious. This time around he’s working as co-choreographer with the incredibly talented Gina (Sofia Wylie). The two already disagreed once when Gina initially rejected his offer, claiming that she wanted something just for herself. But now they’re about to butt heads again all thanks to “Be Our Guest.”
Gina’s idea for the dance? A can-can number led by none other than her character, the Featherduster. Carlos wants to go, in his own words, more “elevated” and less “basic.” His plan for this number? A noir-inspired performance orchestrated by his role, Lumière. We don’t really know what that means but we know this problem well. It’s the saga of two competing stars and it always leads to an explosion.
Before Miss Jenn (Kate Reinders) breaks them up, both Gina and Carlos get in some prime high school insults. “Well I actually spent a month in France once, so I kinda know this dance inside out,” Gina says.
“And I choreographed all three of my sisters’ Quinceañera dances despite not getting one for myself. So I think I know how to twirl with a salad fork, OK?” Carlos fires back.
But Carlos vs. Gina isn’t the only surprise Episode 4 has in store. According to a press release for the episode, “When a blizzard barrels down on Salt Lake City, the Wildcats are stranded at East High after hours, just as E.J. receives some bad news. As cabin fever sets in, Miss Jenn inspires Nini to make a bold choice about her future; Kourtney’s coworker Howie makes a surprising move; and Gina and Carlos come to blows.” That’s right; we’re getting a bottle episode. And with emotions this high it’s sure to be a fun one.
You can catch all the drama (and those fabulous dance moves) this Friday, June 4 on Disney+. In the meantime check out the teaser above, and marvel at Gina’s flawless can-can kick.
