Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) resisted pressure from the left to erase explorer Christopher Columbus rather than celebrate with an official statement promoting Columbus Day in Florida on Monday.
DeSantis signed the statement as leftist politicians and others continue to defame Columbus using contemporary standards, renaming the day “Indigenous Peoples Day.”
The governor’s statement read in part:
“Columbus Day commemorates the life and legacy of the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus, who made Europeans aware of the existence of the New World and whose travels opened the door for the development of European settlements in the Western Hemisphere, which would eventually lead to to the founding of the United States of America.”

How America Commemorated Columbus
DeSantis also spoke about how Columbus Day was first recognized as a national holiday by President Benjamin Harrison in 1892.
He added that “until recently” it was a holiday that was a “day for all Americans.”

The Florida governor also said the day had “become political”.
The signed statement also stated:
“Columbus is a unique figure in Western civilization who exemplifies courage, risk-taking and heroism in the face of enormous opportunities; as a visionary who saw the possibilities of exploration beyond Europe; and as one of the founders who laid the foundations for what would one day become the United States of America, which would commemorate Columbus by naming the federal district after him.”
DeSantis made a point to mention the pride that some 17 million Italian-Americans have for Christopher Columbus.
In fact, his statement acknowledged the contributions of Italian-Americans to American culture, “…a community whose warmth, generosity, patriotism and love of family have made these characteristics even greater components of the wider American culture and way of life. “
“What we really celebrate is the fact that Columbus’s voyage made America possible… And that’s exactly why the holiday critics are trying to attack it. To celebrate Columbus Day is to say it’s right that America was founded .” https://t.co/hO4t80l1hR

The Left Trash Columbus
While progressives and the left are actively working to demonize long-held American traditions and points of pride, Columbus Day is squarely in their sights.
On Monday, Representative Nydia Velázquez (D-NY) tweeted that “Today should just be #IndigenousPeopleDay.”
But that statement didn’t go far enough for the Democrat.
Velázquez’s tweet continued: “And yet this day is still shared with a genocidal maniac. We must take this time to reflect on the brutal history of violence against indigenous peoples in America and recognize that there is still much work to be done to reverse this damage.” to recover.”
Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) shared similar sentiments, expressing them on Twitter:
“Millions of indigenous people have died in the genocide perpetrated against them in America. Today we dwell on the solemn acknowledgment of this human tragedy. And reconnect to uplift the original inhabitants of this land.”
Not to be outdone by the two New York Democrats, Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) also tweeted:
“On #IndigenousPeoplesDay, I hope people use this time to reflect and learn from our history. Indigenous people have been here long before America’s ‘discovery’, and they are essential to our future.”
As usual, anyone with a public platform wanted to shoot Columbus too.
NBA San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich cited “the painful history of injustice and atrocities that many European explorers have inflicted on tribes and indigenous communities,” while reprimanding a school district in San Antonio, TX, for holding a school vacation.
What’s more ridiculous and insulting, though, is Popovich’s statement that Italian-Americans honoring Columbus is like, “We should be proud of Hitler for being German.”
“I’m a little confused about our city and why it’s Indigenous Peoples Day, shortening Columbus Day. Columbus? He initiated a New World genocide. That’s what he did.”

Joe Biden Celebrates Indigenous Peoples Day
On Friday, President Joe Biden became the first president to issue a Proclamation of Indigenous Peoples Day.
He also made a proclamation on the occasion of Columbus Day, but made it a point to mention the “devastation” and “violence” that European explorers like Columbus brought to the New World.
While Columbus Day is a federal holiday, 10 states and as many as 130 cities across the country have begun celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day instead of Columbus Day.
Several Republicans tweeted their support for Columbus Day.
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) simply said, “Columbus Day.”
As Senator Doug Mastriano (R-PA) tweeted: “Today we celebrate the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas and the dawn of Western civilization in the New World. #Columbus day.”
The House Republicans’ official Twitter account was also succinct: “It’s called Columbus Day. Pass it on.”
