GOP tries to recruit candidate to compete against Trump-approved candidate in Pennsylvania Senate race

GOP tries to recruit candidate to compete against Trump-approved candidate in Pennsylvania Senate race

Despite just taking an unlikely win with Glenn Youngkin’s victory in Virginia on Tuesday, the Republican Party is already at odds with itself, at least in one key race.

Rather than focus on the important campaign issues, Pennsylvania’s Republicans are trying to recruit a new candidate to run for the Senate — despite already having a strong candidate in the race approved by President Trump.

The GOP’s preferred candidate is businessman and former Treasury Department official David McCormick.

McCormick is also said to be a carpet bagger: he lives in Connecticut, not Pennsylvania.

Curious situation

Many Republicans running for office in 2022 are seeking the approval of former President Donald Trump. In September, Trump approved current Pennsylvania Senate candidate Sean Parnell.

However, Parnell is facing allegations of domestic violence by his former wife amid a custody battle. Parnell has denied all wrongdoing, but image is everything in politics.

Interestingly enough, McCormick has his own ties to Trump. His wife Dina Powell McCormick was deputy national security adviser in the Trump administration.

The other declared candidate is Carla Sands, who also has ties to Trump. Sands served as ambassador to Denmark during the Trump administration.

get Trump?

Enter David McCormick. He has quite an impressive resume. He is from the Pittsburgh area, graduated from West Point, attended Army Ranger school, served in the Gulf War and received a Bronze Star. He graduated from Princeton with a Ph.D. and worked at the highest level of the Treasury Department in the George W. Bush administration.

For his part, Parnell is an Army veteran who spent more than a year fighting in Afghanistan in the 10th Mountain Division.

Republicans will be looking for those who can do what he did, bring in independents, suburban voters and women, but also some crossover Democrats who can’t live up to the radical agenda touted by so many Democratic candidates.

However, the unspoken wish of top GOP buyers in Pennsylvania is, do all that minus Trump.

Where the Republicans in Pennsylvania, or anywhere else, can’t get away is the fact that Glenn Youngkin also won thanks to the grassroots support of the Republican Party, which still strongly supports Donald Trump.

Top PA Republicans are all in it

David McCormick gets glowing comments from Pennsylvania’s top GOP officials who think he can take a win if he runs.

Republican National Committee member in Pennsylvania Christine Toretti said, “I think he would be the best chance we have for the Republican Party. I find his candidacy very intriguing.”

Former Republican State Party spokesman Greg Manz, also a veteran of both Trump campaigns, said: “David McCormick will soon emerge as the frontrunner. His bona fide public policy is second to none and he will display outstanding fundraising prowess.”

It seems that the GOP generally has a decision to make when it comes to whether or not to try to squeeze Trump out.
