Crossovers between rock and electronic music are common these days, if not always predictable.
Enter former Guns N’ Roses and current SIXX:AM guitarist DJ Ashba, who has announced an upcoming electronic remix of Italian folk classic “Bella Ciao”.
Ashba was first inspired to remix the song after hearing it in Netflix’s international hit money robbery. He described it as “epic and dramatic,” combining rock and electronic elements to create what he calls “guitar dance music,” or GDM for short. The track, which will be released on October 29, is meant to be a powerful tribute to the original.
“After being completely obsessed with money robbery, I was so inspired by ‘Bella Ciao’ and the history of the song. “I couldn’t wait to get into the studio and make my own GDM version,” Ashba said in a statement. “I wanted it to be epic and dramatic, with a big bass, smashing guitar and a catchy beat that I know the fans will love. After it was completed, I told my friend, famous Disney artist Craig Fraser, on my new version of this classic song, and he was also a fan of the show, got inspired and made this unique painting of the iconic mask of money robbery. I was so blown away; I thought it would be the perfect cover for this single.”
This is not Ashba’s first introduction to dance music. The famed guitarist released three electronic singles last year, all of which sum up his goal of providing a fresh take on modern electronic music.
“I’d go to a lot of EDM concerts, and their shows are so over the top and, you know, all these young kids are just going crazy, aren’t they?” Ashba told the Las Vegas Review Journal last year. “And the only thing that I’ve noticed is…the guitar is missing, you know, and I saw an opportunity, like five years ago, by saying, ‘If I could take what I’m doing and do it one way or the other. inject into this world in a different way.’ A lot of kids aren’t exposed to much guitar in that world.”
