Fauci urges police officers to get vaccinated

Police officers and others responsible for public safety should see vaccination against Covid-19 as an important part of their role, said Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease doctor, in an interview with Fox News on Sunday.

“Think about what it means not to get vaccinated when you are in a position where you have a responsible job and want to protect yourself because you are needed in your job, whether you are a police officer or a pilot are other of these types of occupations, ”said Dr. Fauci, director of the National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Diseases.

Police unions in cities across the country are calling on members to oppose Covid vaccine requirements for their jobs. In Chicago, the head of the police union asked officials to ignore a city order to report their vaccination status by the end of October 15. No vaccinations are required for urban workers, but workers who are not vaccinated will be vaccinated twice -weekly exam. John Catanzara, the president of the Fraternal Order of Police in Chicago, posted a video last week predicting that Chicago police officers would not show up for work because of vaccination policies.

In Seattle, the union said the shortage of police officers in the city would worsen because of a vaccination mandate. On Sunday, Dr. Fauci that public service workers who resisted the vaccination were misguided.

“I’m not comfortable telling people what to do under normal circumstances, but we are not under normal circumstances right now,” said Dr. Fauci. “Take the police: we now know the statistics, more police officers die from Covid than from other causes of death. So it makes no sense not to try to protect yourself and the colleagues you work with. “

More than 460 American law enforcement officers have died of Covid, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page, making the virus by far the leading cause of duty-related deaths this year and last. During this period, more than four times as many officials have died from the virus as from gunshots.

“Things like mandates, be it masks or vaccinations, are very important,” said Dr. Fauci. “As individuals, we don’t live in a vacuum. We live in a society and society needs to be protected. And you do that by protecting not only yourself, but also the people around you by getting vaccinated. “
