Myers said the class of executives hired on congressional campaigns were all part of a cohort that led legislative races in the state of Virginia earlier this year. A dozen members of that class will lead congressional campaigns, Myers said.

Myers, a former DCCC regional political director, said there really isn’t a pipeline for underrepresented senior party officials. The long-term goal of the program is not only to help candidates get their first chance at running federal races, but also to support them as they climb the ladder of party leadership.

The House Democrats campaign group had many publicized issues with senior staff diversity during the 2020 election cycle. Members publicly said that the DCCC, then headed by Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-Ill.), was in “complete chaos” and lacked diversity. Finally, in the fall of 2019, there was a significant shift in senior staff, including the hiring of a new Executive Director.

Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (DN.Y.), who chairs the DCCC this cycle, warned of similar warnings about workforce diversity early in his tenure, but there was no similar public outcry during the off-season.
