BLM leader threatens ‘bloodshed’ and riots as NYC cops return to strict policing

New York City Mayor-elect Eric Adams won’t be sworn in until January 1, 2022, but he’s already been threatened by a group that he could do things their way, or else.

On Wednesday, Adams and the head of Black Lives Matter of Greater New York, Hawk Newsome, met in a closed-door meeting to discuss policing under Adams’ new administration.

According to Fox News and the Associated Press, Newsome and other BLM leaders threatened city-wide violence if Adams planned to return to the New York City Police Department’s crackdown on crime.

Don’t go backwards

According to a report by Fox News, the meeting degenerated into a shouting match. The incoming mayor is a former police captain.

Adams ignored the threat from BLM, calling it “toothless” and saying it would not affect policy making in his administration. At a press conference on Thursday morning, he said:

“That’s silly, and I think New Yorkers shouldn’t allow such rhetoric — this city won’t be a city of riots, it won’t be a city of burning. It will be a city where we will be safe. It’s no surprise what I said. When I ran for mayor of the city of New York, I said I would restore an anti-weapons unit in plain clothes. The voters voted for that. I indicated what I was going to do. What I’ve said on the campaign trail is what you’re going to see in City Hall, and I’m not afraid of that.”

BLM ‘betrayed’?

Outside the Borough Hall after the meeting, Newsome accused Adams of “betraying” the Black Lives Matter movement and of not paying attention to the group’s demands.

“If he thinks they’re going back to the old way of policing, then we’re going to take to the streets again. There will be riots, there will be fire and there will be bloodshed because we believe in defending our people. There’s a reason he called us last year to explain why he would be the best candidate for Black New York. He knows that black people and brown people respect our work. He was behind Black Lives Matter when it was politically beneficial, but now it’s better for him to be a pro-agent.”

The Adams Calendar

In an uber-blue city like New York, Eric Adams could have been described as the most moderate of the Democratic candidates running for the mayoral primary, yet he describes himself as progressive.

During the campaign, he was quite clear that he was not in favor of downgrading the police force, but was in favor of common sense reform.

Adams also says he plans to offer someone from Black Lives Matter a seat on a mayoral committee. But a seat at the table to actually discuss the issues may not be a “requirement” from BLM.
