Biden calls Trump and supporters ‘twisted’ and ‘un-American’, then says he will unite America

Joe Biden unleashed a fiery speech on the anniversary of the Capitol riot, taunting former President Trump and his supporters for having a “twisted” view of the day’s events and suggesting they were “un-American” because they tried to suppress voices. He concluded by claiming that he would unite America.

Biden used the phrase “former president” 16 times during his speech and immediately went on to attack Trump, accusing him of having “assembled the crowd into an attack” that day.

He went on to berate Trump for continuing to spread election lies “because his bruised ego is more important to him than our democracy or our constitution.”

Biden accused supporters of the former president of spreading a message that the real uprising was on Election Day and the fight for democracy was on Jan. 6.

“That the riots that took place on January 6 is a true expression of the will of the people. Can you think of a more distorted way of looking at this country, looking at America?” asked Biden.

Biden insults Trump who backs him, says he wants to unite America

Biden shifted his speech to Democrat efforts to nationalize elections and expand access to postal voting.

“Right now, state after state, new laws are being written, not to protect the vote, but to deny it. Not only to suppress the mood, but also to undermine it,” Biden said.

He made that claim after bragging that a record 150 million Americans voted in the 2020 election, even while a pandemic was raging at the time. When Republicans try to suppress votes, they’ve done a terrible job.

“The former president and his supporters have decided that the only way to win is to suppress your vote and undermine our elections. It’s wrong,” the president continued. “It is undemocratic. And frankly, it’s un-American.”

The president at one point accused Trump and his supporters of “holding a dagger to the throat of America and American democracy” and denied that they had gone to the Capitol as patriots.

While he offends those who support the president and are concerned about the integrity of the election, Biden concluded by suggesting that he unite America.

“I will defend this nation, not allow anyone to stab a dagger through the throat of democracy,” he said. “We will ensure that the will of the people is heard, that the battle is victorious, not violence, that the authority of this nation is always peacefully transferred.”

Biden added: “I believe the power of the presidency and the goal is to unite this nation. Not to divide, to lift us up, not to tear us apart. It’s about us, not me.”

If that’s your belief, you’re not doing it right.

Trump fires back

Donald Trump has issued a statement indicating that contrary to Biden’s claims to seek unity, he is actually attacking him and his supporters as a means of further dividing America.

Trump accused Biden of “using my name today to try to divide America further”.

“This political theater is all just a distraction from Biden’s complete and utter failure,” he added in a statement interspersed with further unproven allegations of voter fraud.

“The Democrats want to own this day of January 6 so they can stir fear and divide America,” he said. “I say let them have it, because America sees through their lies and polarizations.”

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) took Biden off his chest for his speech attacking Trump and his supporters rather than trying to unite America.

“What a brutal politicization of January 6 by President Biden,” Graham tweeted.

“President Biden and Vice President Harris’ speeches today were more of an effort to revive a failed presidency than to mark the anniversary of a dark day in American history,” he said. added.
