How Regina King Sidestepped the Child Star Curse and Won Hollywood

Since the split with Warner, King has stayed single, focusing on her craft and becoming a vocal advocate in the push for diversity in Hollywood. And finally, the awards began pouring in. Her first Emmy win, for work in the first season of ABC’s anthology series American Crime, came in 2015, with another following suit a year later. At the same time, she began developing a serious passion for directing. Since helming a 2013 episode of Southland, she’s gone on to direct episodes of Scandal, This Is Us, Shameless, The Good Doctor, and Insecure.

“My career right now is not a transition [away from acting], it’s a hyphenate. In a lot of regards, it’s just beginning,” she told Vulture in 2015. “You guys haven’t had a chance to see what I can do yet.”

And that included her next major role, a reunion with The Leftovers auteur Damon Lindelof for his ambitious adaptation of the cult comic book series Watchmen, which debuted on HBO in late 2019 to great acclaim. “I’m like, ‘I wait until I’m darn near 50 to be a superhero,'” King told USA Today with a laugh. “Thank goodness my body is still fluid, and I can run and jump and do some cool stuff.” Her work as Angela Abar in series earned King her fourth Emmy.

After Watchmen, King took her directing career to the next level, stepping behind the camera to direct One Night in Miami…, an adaptation of Kemp Powers‘ stage play imagining a meeting between Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown and Sonny Liston. The Amazon project was just scenes away from completing filming with the coronavirus pandemic shut down the industry a year ago. As she waited to return to production, the United States found itself in an overdue racial reckoning, which had King itching to return to set even more.

A Julia Child Series Is Coming to HBO Max

Belatedly responding to everyone who wished Julie and Julia cut out the whole blogger plot, HBO Max has ordered a drama series based on the life of acclaimed chef, cookbook author and TV host Julia Child. “Julia” will star Happy Valley’s Sarah Lancashire as Child. The cast also includes David Hyde Pierce as Child’s husband, Paul, Isabella Rossellini, and Bebe Neuwirth.

“This show’s look into her life, marriage, and trailblazing career as she transformed the way we talk about food is an absolute delight,” Sarah Aubrey, head of original content for HBO Max, told Variety. “Our incredible cast and formidable creative team are a recipe for success, and we couldn’t be more excited.”

The beats of Child’s life are probably well known by now. After working as a copywriter, she enlisted in the OSS during WWII, where she first began cooking by coming up with recipes for shark repellant. During her service, she met her husband and the two moved to Paris after the war. Once in France, she attended the Cordon Bleu school, and met collaborators Simone Beck and Louisette Bertholle, with whom she eventually wrote Mastering The Art of French Cooking.

Child’s show, The French Chef, debuted on PBS in 1963 and ran for a decade, pioneering the “cooking show” format, and introducing Americans to Child’s charming demeanor. I mean, just watch her mess with these lobsters.

HBO Max has ordered eight episodes of the series, which will “explore the emergence of public TV, feminism and the women’s movement, the nature of celebrity and America’s cultural growth.” And presumably include a lot of glamour shots of butter.

Mindy let Stephen Colbert help her deliver the news on The Late Show. The talk show host broke the news, telling viewers they will be “thrilled to find out something extraordinary that nobody knows up until this moment.”

“I’m telling it for the first time now, it feels so strange,” Mindy shared. “But I gave birth to a baby boy on September 3.”

“No one even knew you were pregnant!” Colbert said, speaking for all of us.

“I know! I know! This is news to a lot of people,” she said. “It’s true,” before revealing her son’s name is Spencer.

Spencer is two and a half years younger than his sister, Katherine.

Last year, Mindy opened up about being a mom, telling Glamour, “I always knew I wanted to be a mom, but I would have put it off and put it off. I’m happy that it happened when it did.”

Exciting times for Mindy and her family!

Surveillance Video of Ambush Shooting of LA Sheriff Deputies Released (Shooter Looks Like a Child!)

Surveillance video of the ambush shooting of two Los Angeles County Sheriff Deputies in Compton Saturday night has been posted by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The video shows the attacker sneaking up from the passenger side of the deputies’ car and firing. As the shooter runs away the passenger door is opened.

The shooter is very short, not as tall as the roof of the squad car, indicating that this ambush could very well have been done by a child.

The deputies were reported to have been shot multiple times, including in the head, and are “fighting for their lives” in surgery.

Riverdale Star Marisol Nichols’ Story of Hunting Child Predators Is Being Turned Into a TV Show

On Riverdale, she’s Hermione Lodge, former mayor and mother to Veronica. In real life, she’s taking down child predators.

A new TV show based on the life of Marisol Nichols is being developed, months after Marie Claire ran a story about how she spends her free time participating in stings to catch child sexual predators. When she’s not working, she partners with the FBI and other law enforcement to use her acting skills in sting operations, sometimes posing as a child and sometimes posing as their parent.

Deadline reports that Sony Pictures TV has optioned the rights to the story and is in the early stages of developing it into a TV show, with Nichols executive producing and likely starring.

The Marie Claire profile, published in April, goes into detail about the roles Nichols plays during these operations, which involve a lot of texts and phone calls luring predators to motel rooms.

Parenting the Highly Sensitive Child

A friend of mine was telling me about how she discovered she may be a Highly Sensitive Person. Through our discussion of what this means, she pointed out that my oldest child may be highly sensitive, which changes the ever evolving lens through which I parent him.

Parents are inundated with messages about the best way to raise their children. What I have found to be true in real life is that what works one day may not the next day. Children are growing through many different stages at a staggering pace and so the best advice I can give parents is just to get to know their child, maintain an open and affectionate bond, and be willing to adapt to all situations that present themselves.

So when I began to consider the ways in which my child is highly sensitive, it does not create an earth shattering change in the way I parent, but it is new information I begin to integrate into my methods and the way I respond to my child.

Research psychologist, Elaine Aron, coined the term “Highly Sensitive Person” in the 1990s following extensive study of highly sensitive temperament traits. Being highly sensitive can mean a lot of different things. It means the child or person perceives sensory stimuli at a more intense rate than what most people might. Highly sensitive people may also be incredibly observant or attuned to subtle changes in the environment. They may become overwhelmed more easily. They may process events with incredible depth.

What is most interesting is that my oldest son definitely possesses some of these traits, but not all of them. He is a very deep thinker, he notices everything, he is emotional and takes very literally to heart his social interactions. But he is not bothered by any physical stimulus. He likes loud music, he likes to get dirty, he thrives in the middle of a crowd.

As a parent, it is important to carefully walk the difficult balance of allowing space for the child’s sensitivities but also teaching the child ways to cope with what challenges them personally. It is possible to be compassionate and considerate of any type of sensitivity while also not necessarily catering every interaction to it.

For example, I have also learned about myself that I process things very deeply. I have a tendency to overanalyze, have concern or worry, and consider a multitude of possible ramifications of every action. This serves me well as a writer and communicator, I am deliberate with my words. It serves me well in my bookkeeping work, I stay on top of my tasks. But I also recognize that not everyone processes this deeply or needs to hear my comprehensive analysis if they ask me a question. I have learned to tailor my responses to be more concise where needed. This further improves my communication because neither others nor myself become bogged down in my thought process.

My internal processing remains unencumbered, I can think as deeply as I want about a situation, but the outward expression I have learned over time to tailor to the situation. Learning to own your personal tendencies but also adapt them to the situation appropriately is a skill that all children will need with regard to some personality traits, whether they are considered highly sensitive or not.

Being able to talk with your child about their personality traits will be an important piece to parenting them over every stage of life. Start the conversations early. Children are more capable of self-reflection than what we generally give them credit for. They can definitely begin to thoughtfully notice and respond to patterns of behavior that we deem “personality” by elementary school age.

Scaffolding may be a useful technique for parents. Scaffolding is a method of teaching that uses what the child already knows to introduce a new concept. This tenet holds true beyond reading, writing, and arithmetic. Children can use their previous experiences to build new understanding of themselves, too. Keeping an open and ongoing dialogue about your child’s emotions and sensitivities can help craft future conversations when you need to bridge your child’s understanding of a difficult concept.

Katy Perry Gives Birth, Welcomes First Child With Orlando Bloom

Cue the fireworks because Katy Perry has officially given birth.

The Grammy-nominated songstress and her fiancé, Orlando Bloom, have welcomed their first child together, a baby girl named Daisy Dove Bloom. Katy and Orlando shared the news with UNICEF, the organization they serve as Goodwill Ambassadors for, on Wednesday, Aug 26.

“We are floating with love and wonder from the safe and healthy arrival of our daughter,” they said in a statement.

“But we know we’re the lucky ones and not everyone can have a birthing experience as peaceful as ours was,” they shared. “Communities around the world are still experiencing a shortage of healthcare workers and every eleven seconds a pregnant woman or newborn dies, mostly from preventable causes. Since COVID-19, many more newborn lives are at risk because of a greater lack of access to water, soap, vaccines and medicines that prevent diseases. As parents to a newborn, this breaks our hearts, as we empathize with struggling parents now more than ever.”

In “celebration of the heart we know our daughter already has,” Katy and Orlando established a UNICEF donation page on baby Daisy’s—or “DDB” as they called her—behalf.

The couple’s daughter arrived into the world on Wednesday, turning Perry into a first-time mom and making 9-year-old Flynn, Bloom’s only child with ex-wife Miranda Kerr, an older brother to his first sister.

The famous parents, who got engaged in Feb. 2019 after a years-long on-and-off romance, announced their baby news in early March when the performer cradled her bump in the music video for “Never Worn White.” The following month, she revealed they had a little girl on the way.
