“Stop asking for money. Let the baby die. It’s called Darwinism. Happy Holidays.”
Ahlers had been putting up flyers near a shopping mall in Toledo, Ohio, to help raise money for his baby boy, Randy James, lovingly known as RJ. But last week as he was driving by the area, he noticed that someone had responded with a hateful message.
Though they have health insurance, the bills are adding up. One test ordered by a geneticist cost $10,000.
So, Ahlers and his wife sought donations.
He simply couldn’t believe someone who read his sign could have so little empathy.
“It shocked me,” he told WTVG. “I mean, it really shocked me that someone would have that kind of cruelty.”
Despite the hurtful message, most of the community has been supportive. Angela Ahlers, RJ’s mother, told CNN they had received an outpouring of love and support from people as far away as Australia, Argentina and Canada.
“That sign did the actual opposite of what that person wanted because obviously it has gone global,” she said.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the GoFundMe for RJ had raised more than $33,000 toward its $20,000 goal.
For now, the couple says they are taking the high road.
“We want to raise our son to not reciprocate hatred with hatred. We want to battle hatred with love,” KC Ahlers told WTVG. “So, we obviously know somebody that did this is disturbed and we hope they get help. But, we’re going to keep taking your signs down as we see them because this town doesn’t need hatred. This town needs love.”
